Miravalles Volcano is located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Less than an hour and a half from Sleepy Cove. Chico took us there on a day trip. The area around Miravalles Volcano is known for the Proyecto Geot̩rmico Miravalles Рa power plant that uses geothermic energy to generate electricity. Located at the foothills of the Miravalles Volcano is a private nature reserve called Las Hornillas, you can take a walk around a live volcanic crater. You can view the geological marvels of bubbling mud pots, bubbling water pools, fumaroles, and crystallized sulfur very close. Bathe in the therapeutic volcanic mud, before riding a horse to the beautiful waterfalls. After our ride we were served excellent Costa Rican food. You can observe pools of hot water, pots of bubbling mud, fumaroles, and sulfur deposits. Las Hornillas attracts national and international tourists and it take about 15 minutes to walk around. This is the only place in Costa Rica where visitors can walk inside an active crater, and see and feel the steam escaping from the boilers below. You can also enjoy the 250 meter long water slide, a sauna, mud baths with therapeutic qualities because of the clay minerals, hot springs, a restaurant, camping area and cabins.
